Phlebitis is inflammation of a vein. It is typically caused by trauma to the vein, usually from the insertion of an intravenous catheter. However, phlebitis can also occur in patients with connective tissue disorders such as lupus, or pancreatic, breast or ovarian cancers.
Warmth, tenderness, redness and swelling along the course of the vein is highly suggestive of superficial phlebitis or thrombophlebitis. An ultrasound evaluation of the area can help in diagnosing phlebitis.
Compression stocking treatment is a common treatment of phlebitis. Other treatments may be necessary depending on the severity of the inflammation.
